Located in Western Romania, both in Banat and Crișana region, Arad is home to almost 160 thousand people.
The city’s multicultural heritage is owed to the fact that it has been part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and since 1918 Romania.
Arad had significant populations of Hungarians, Germans, Jews, Serbians, Bulgarians and Roma at various points in its history.
During the second half of the 19th century and the beginning on the 20th century, the city has experienced rapid development, most of the important and imposing buildings in the city being built in that period.

Arad Free Tours was established in 2013 and since then we’ve had tours with tourists from all over the world.
We started this project with the aim to promote Arad – a city located in the Western part of Romania. It’s history and it’s beautiful buildings have been forgotten by the local authorities in the past few decades, so we realized that if we wanted something to happen for the tourists who visit Arad, we had to do it ourselves
Alternative Tourism Association was founded in 2015 by a group of young people from Arad who were willing to help boosting local and national tourism using alternative tourism as a tool. After starting the Free Tours projects, we also opened an Alternative Tourism School with professionals from various domains, aiming to deliver well prepared personnel for the tourism industry in Romania and, why not, Europe.
